Top 5 Books of 2020!!!
This list is in no special order. The descriptions are stolen from amazon..the opinions are my own.
I have waited for this book my whole life. That sounds made up but it's true. A horror book where a Black girl gets to be a main character! The description as, stolen from Amazon, "The summer of 1989 brought terror to the town of Shadows Creek, Florida in the form of a massacre at the local carnival, Cirque Berserk. One fateful night, a group of teens killed a dozen people then disappeared into thin air. No one knows why they did it, where they went, or even how many of them there were, but legend has it they still roam the abandoned carnival, looking for blood to spill.Thirty years later, best friends, Sam and Rochelle, are in the midst of a boring senior trip when they learn about the infamous Cirque Berserk. Seeking one last adventure, they and their friends journey to the nearby Shadows Creek to see if the urban legends about Cirque Berserk are true. But waiting for them beyond the carnival gates is a night of brutality, bloodshed, and betrayal. Will they make they it out alive, or will the carnival’s past demons extinguish their futures?" The story is so fun, and Jessica is just such an incredible writer. If you haven't checked it out definitely pick it up. Here
2. Benny Rose,The Cannibal King: Hailey Piper
Hailey Piper knows how to write. I mean she REALLY knows how to write. The book is described: "Blackwood, Vermont has one legend to its name--Benny Rose, the Cannibal King. Every local kid knows him and tells his stories, especially on Halloween. When a new girl moves to town in the autumn of 1987, the legend inspires high school junior Desiree St. Fleur and her friends to pull a Benny Rose-themed prank. A few laughs and screams, and they'll have a Happy Halloween.
But a vicious storm crashes into Blackwood and interrupts the festivities. Soon the girls find themselves trapped and hunted in a strange neighborhood where no one will help them. There's nothing made-up about Benny Rose this Halloween night. The truth is coming, and it's hungry." I loved the ending of this, I need you to go buy it and then come find me so I can gush over how much I loved it. Side note:
The Rewind or Die series is so fun. Here is a link to other stories I thought were really fun!
3. Seeing Things: Sonora Taylor
Who doesn't love a ghost story? This book was so fun to read, Sonora is an incredible author and you couldn't go wrong with picking up any of her books. This one is my favorite though, its' description is "Abby Gillman has discovered that with growing up, there comes a lot of blood. But nothing prepares her for the trail of blood she sees in the hallway after class - or the ghost she finds crammed inside an abandoned locker. No one believes Abby, of course. She’s only seeing things. As much as Abby wants to be believed, what she wants more is to know why she can suddenly see the dead. Unfortunately, they won’t tell her. In fact, none of them will speak to her. At all. Abby leaves for her annual summer visit to her uncle’s house with tons of questions. The visit will give her answers the ghosts won’t - but she may not like what she finds out."
The book does involve dead kids but it is written in a way that isn't graphic just the right amount to get the point across.
4. Unboxed : Briana Morgan
I don't read plays. Pardon my opinion but they are boring, dumb, and hard to read. This book Unboxed does not fit into that category. My main complaint was it was too short I wanted more. "Greg Zipper is a paranormal vlogger whose livelihood relies on his online popularity. When a fight between him and his girlfriend goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Greg purchases a dark web mystery box in hopes of restoring his audience's faith in him and hitting one million subscribers. But when Greg opens the box, he gets much more than he bargained for, including a Boxer who’s determined to stop him from taking his loved ones for granted. Now Greg must do all he can to stop the Boxer, or else he'll lose his livelihood—along with the woman he loves." This is one play you should definitely read.
5. True Crime : Samantha Kolesnick
I work with trauma daily and Samantha knows how to write trauma. This book is so sad, bloody, and traumatic. I loved it so much I have already told my coworkers to read it.
"Suzy and her brother, Lim, live with their abusive mother in a town where the stars don’t shine at night. Once the abuse becomes too much to handle, the two siblings embark on a sordid cross-country murder spree beginning with their mom. As the murder tally rises, Suzy’s mental state spirals into irredeemable madness." If that sounds up your alley definitely pick it up here
I want to add some runners up or maybe if I did a top 7.
